{"id":2254,"date":"2019-10-30T15:26:56","date_gmt":"2019-10-30T19:26:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sweatsoxbaseball.com\/blog\/?p=2254"},"modified":"2019-10-30T15:31:28","modified_gmt":"2019-10-30T19:31:28","slug":"sweatsox-beat-the-clock-and-the-orioles","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sweatsoxbaseball.com\/blog\/2019\/10\/30\/sweatsox-beat-the-clock-and-the-orioles\/","title":{"rendered":"SweatSox Beat the Clock, and the Orioles"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ever since the SweatSox won the Tier 3 championship well over a month ago, we\u2019ve been swamped with messages of congratulations.\u00a0\u00a0Everyone* seems genuinely happy for our most recent success, and we\u2019ve seemingly found our way once again after hitting rock bottom up in Tier 1 a few years back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>*Reports from #FallBall2019 seem to indicate that Cornwall\u2019s Jenna Flannigan is not at all impressed with a Tier 3 title.\u00a0\u00a0It makes sense though since she\u2019s seen us at our peak, when we defeated the River Rats 3 games to 2 after being down 2 games to 0, ultimately winning on a Marc Lett walk-off grand slam!<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After sifting through the hundreds of texts and emails from the tech savvy teams, and going through the voice messages and faxes from the old school Braumeisters and Braves, the one thing everyone really wants to know is: how did you do it, how did you guys manage to take down the powerhouse Orioles?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You asked, we answered.\u00a0\u00a0Here\u2019s an out-by-out recap of how we beat the Orioles, during the regular season, at Trillium, in July.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>TRILLIUM<\/strong>&#8211; It took 4 tries, but the SweatSox finally came out on the winning end of a Sox-Orioles 2019 regular season matchup wayyyyyy back on July 31st.&nbsp;&nbsp;The previous 3 matchups all went the Orioles way, by a combined total of 4 runs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"248\" src=\"http:\/\/sweatsoxbaseball.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/IMG_7185-1024x248.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2255\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sweatsoxbaseball.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/IMG_7185-1024x248.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/sweatsoxbaseball.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/IMG_7185-300x73.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sweatsoxbaseball.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/IMG_7185-768x186.jpg 768w, https:\/\/sweatsoxbaseball.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/IMG_7185-850x206.jpg 850w, https:\/\/sweatsoxbaseball.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/IMG_7185.jpg 1164w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The pitching matchup to start the game was Mark Bond (career 7-7) for the SweatSox, vs Eric Boisvert (37-18) who we\u2019ve faced as a member of the Pirates, Athletics, River Hawks, and now the Orioles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The 7th inning of this game was really fascinating, so let\u2019s quickly yadda yadda through the first 6 so we can get to the fun stuff.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Boisvert gave up just 17 runs in 2019; and 4 of those came in the 1st inning of this game.&nbsp;&nbsp;Big start!<\/li><li>Eric Robichaud hit a monster shot off Bus Cop that we believe landed on the 14th<sup> <\/sup>green at the Pineview Golf Course.<\/li><li>Orioles score 5 in the 4th to take a 1-run lead. MBond\u2019s day on the mound was done after 4 complete IP, and was in line for the loss<\/li><li>But wait, Sox bat around and score 6 in the 5th, so out of nowhere Cop is in line for the back-door win!&nbsp;&nbsp;Ramage enters the game looking for the 3-inning save.<\/li><li>Orioles chip away and eventually tie the game in the 6<sup>th<\/sup> on a Francis Sabourin 2-out 3-run classic \u201cTrillium HR\u201d.&nbsp;&nbsp;Ramage blows save.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>TOP 7<\/strong>: The SweatSox and Orioles were tied heading into the 7<sup>th<\/sup>.\u00a0\u00a0I, Shaun Keay, said enough was enough and took matters into my own hands.\u00a0\u00a0I hit a single to reach base (didn\u2019t get pinch run for here), strolled to second when John Groves walked (didn\u2019t get pinch run for there), then chugga chugga\u2019d home when Eric White hit a 2-out line drive to left, just far enough for me to choo choo the go-ahead run in (didn\u2019t need a pinch runner anywhere). SOX UP 1.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>BOTTOM 7<\/strong>: With White shut down on the mound for the rest of the regular season, GLE still feeling the effects of the 50th win celebration a few nights earlier, and Lowry still rubbing &amp; tugging somewhere in Lanark County, it was up to Old Man Groves to pop a few pills and get us three outs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>OUT1<\/strong>: After the first two O\u2019s reached base, a pinch-hitter stepped into the batter\u2019s box in a super obvious bunting situation.&nbsp;&nbsp;Cory Bond, playing CF for the cottaging Kent Johnston, set the bunt defense up from the outfield. The Authority\u2019s strategy seemed legit, but it had one major flaw: nobody was left to cover 2nd!&nbsp;&nbsp;The Oriole baserunner could see the hole in the defense and took a few extra steps towards 3<sup>rd<\/sup> to maybe try and steal it, but Groves and CBond had the perfect counter: the rarely seen 1-8 pickoff that worked!&nbsp;&nbsp;OUT1.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"828\" height=\"828\" src=\"http:\/\/sweatsoxbaseball.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/IMG_7186.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2256\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sweatsoxbaseball.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/IMG_7186.jpg 828w, https:\/\/sweatsoxbaseball.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/IMG_7186-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/sweatsoxbaseball.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/IMG_7186-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sweatsoxbaseball.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/IMG_7186-768x768.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 828px) 100vw, 828px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>OUT2<\/strong>: After a wild pitch, stolen base, and another walk, the O\u2019s had runners on 1st and 3rd, and they tried to get the winning run into scoring position via another stolen base.&nbsp;Ross Hughes was behind the plate for the Sox and threw the would-be base stealer out before he even had a chance to slide.&nbsp;&nbsp;No team steals twice on Tang in an inning!&nbsp;&nbsp;OUT2.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>OUT3<\/strong>: If football is a game of inches, then SweatSox baseball is game of seconds.\u00a0With 2 outs and runners on 1st and 3rd yet again, Cory visited the mound from CF to go over the options.\u00a0\u00a0With a lefty coming up to bat and OMG struggling, the right baseball move (per Josh Ramage, Assistant <em>to the<\/em> GM) was to bring the GLE into the game for the 1-out save.\u00a0\u00a0The Authority ultimately decided to disregard all logic &amp; reason and go with his gut: leave Groves on the mound.\u00a0\u00a0What we didn\u2019t realize at the time was this conversation was taking place at 10:59pm, with the lights just seconds away from turning off (and reverting to a tie).\u00a0\u00a0Sure enough on the very next pitch, the Orioles batter swung and popped out to Eric White at 2<sup>nd<\/sup>, exactly a millisecond before the lights went off.\u00a0\u00a0OUT3!
