{"id":2296,"date":"2019-10-30T16:46:05","date_gmt":"2019-10-30T20:46:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sweatsoxbaseball.com\/blog\/?p=2296"},"modified":"2019-10-30T16:51:02","modified_gmt":"2019-10-30T20:51:02","slug":"sweatsox-sweep-capitals-advance-to-semis","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sweatsoxbaseball.com\/blog\/2019\/10\/30\/sweatsox-sweep-capitals-advance-to-semis\/","title":{"rendered":"SweatSox Sweep Capitals, Advance to Semi\u2019s"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>SPORTSPLEX<\/strong>&#8211; Behind strong starting pitching in game 1, and even stronger relief pitching in game 2, the SweatSox swept the Capitals in the T3QF and punched our ticket back to the semi\u2019s for the second straight season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Getting past the Capitals, who we were hoping to avoid in the first round, was not easy.\u00a0\u00a0We knew we\u2019d have to beat the Ginja Ninja Pat Hurtubise at least once, and probably twice since we expected him to start games 1, 2, and 3 (if necessary).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Up against The Big Hurtubise in Game 1 was Eric White, who was making his first start on the mound for the SweatSox in over a month.\u00a0\u00a0He was hardly rusty though, having just led the Kanata Athletics to a Peterborough Civic Memorial Tournament championship a week earlier.  Tier 3!!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>G1<\/strong>: The SweatSox won the game 7-3, back by a 13K complete game from the man who now has a big heart on his ass.\u00a0\u00a0White was backed by strong defense, highlighted by a two-out bases loaded jumping catch from starting second baseman Cory Bond.\u00a0\u00a0The SweatSox were also aided by a Capitals team that lost their shit when a couple calls (and eventually a couple ejections) didn\u2019t go their way.\u00a0They were probably (definitely) right, but it\u2019s like Larry always says: you\u2019ve just got to keep calm and carry on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-twitter aligncenter wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">FINAL: SweatSox 7. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/Ky70yLMDj9\">pic.twitter.com\/Ky70yLMDj9<\/a><\/p>&mdash; SweatSox (@SweatSox) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SweatSox\/status\/1163205634252316673?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">August 18, 2019<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><figcaption>It was indeed ready for the late game!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Up 1-0 in the series, we were able to get cute with our rotation and bypass Josh Ramage\u2019s spot in the starting rotation.\u00a0\u00a0The Authority felt like saving him and his undefeated record for a potential do-or-die Game 3 (or Game 1 of the semi\u2019s) was the right big picture move, so we gave the ball to Dillon Lowry, our Post Season Guy, to win the series.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>G2<\/strong>: Unfortunately, our Asshole ran into control issues and couldn\u2019t pitch out of the 2nd inning.\u00a0\u00a0It was clear he forgot how to handle wet balls, most likely because of all the co-showering he\u2019s been doing lately where someone else takes care of the wet ball handling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fortunately, the SweatSox have a bullpen this year, and his name is Cory Bond.\u00a0\u00a0Despite declaring himself out to The Powers That Be earlier that morning, our one-legged GLE <em>heroically<\/em> entered the game in the 2nd with the SweatSox down 8-4, and <em>valiantly<\/em> pitched 4 innings of relief, long enough for the Sox to even the game up.\u00a0\u00a0In the 6th, CBond gave the ball to MBond, whose load was properly managed this season, to throw the final 2 innings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bus Cop threw a scoreless 6th, then watched as the SweatSox broke the tie in the 7th by scoring 5, highlighted by:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>some classic Craig Cornell small-ball (followed by some questionable base-running)<\/li><li>a Chris Lidstone RBI double<\/li><li>a Dillon Lowry 2-run single.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>BOTTOM 7<\/strong>: Up 5, Mark Bond walked the first three batters he faced, forcing The Authority to bring a 4th Sox pitcher into the game.\u00a0\u00a0But who?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>We couldn\u2019t use John Groves, he was subbed out in the 2nd.<\/li><li>We couldn\u2019t use Josh Ramage, he was subbed out in the 5th (on the recommendation of Eric White, who said he\u2019d be available to close if needed).<\/li><li>We couldn\u2019t use Eric White, he was not available yet<\/li><li>We couldn\u2019t use Dillon Lowry, the balls were even wetter than before.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So it was the GLE who <em>fearlessly<\/em> re-took the mound in the 7th to save the game.\u00a0But even our great lefty has his limits, and he continued the streak of Bond family walks.\u00a0\u00a0After watching his Captain give and leave everything he had on the mound, Eric White\u2019s heart grew three sizes and he finally demanded the ball (or he saw we were thinking of going to Ross and Mutumbo&#8217;d that plan).\u00a0\u00a0White threw the strikes we desperately needed, got some help on D with a big time Klein-Hughes-Lowry double play, and then struck out the final batter to clinch the series for the SweatSox.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-twitter aligncenter wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">FINAL: SweatSox 16.
