Less than 36 hours after the SuperHyjinx finished, the SweatSox took the field for our final game of the regular season, facing off against the Cornwall River Rats.
Since all signs point to us facing Cornwall in the 1st round of the playoffs, it seemed to make sense not to give them a preview of what we’ll be throwing at them, so Cory “The Authority” Bond sent Denver Hunt to the mound for the first start of his NCBL career. Cory didn’t stop there though, or he was still messed up from the one beer he had at the SuperHyjinx, but he decided to create his 3rd Bizarro lineup of the season. Groves led off, I batted third, and Denver & Eric batted 7th and 8th. Weird.
Somehow, the game remained scoreless until the 6th inning when Marc Lett (single) and Chris Lidstone (double) had back to back RBI hits that gave the Shostappa a 3-0 lead. In the bottom of the inning though an unearned run plated, leading to a mound visit from 1B Cory and 2B Denver, who convinced P Denver to give up the ball. The Janitor (was he called that yet?) came in and pitched the final 4 outs for his second consecutive save, which meant Denver had more wins than Cory this year!
For his 5.67 innings of 3-hit, 4-walk, and 0-run ball, the Shostappa picks up his 18th career 2004 A&W Kamloops International Baseball Game MVP Award. With the early-afternoon win, the SweatSox also had a brief share of the Tier II lead:
The Apres Baseball Hyjinx was once again hosted by Shoeless Joe, who seemed to have both his shoes, but was down a bat. Unless that wasn’t Joe, in which case we’ve been duped:
To celebrate his 1st complete season with the SweatSox, Chris ordered some water with blue balls in them, then went all badass and drank it without using the straw:
When the drinks were eventually delivered, Eric spotted, pointed at, and quickly cleaned a beer spill:
Next up for the SweatSox will be a matchup with Cornwall in the 1st round of the playoffs. See you then!
