The Stittsville SweatSox

For Drunkerer or Soberer

Posted on June 1, 2015

The streaky SweatSox travelled to Allen Park last night to face the Gatineau Marc Sports for the first time this year.  We were looking to stop a 2 game losing skid, while Marc Sports was looking to avenge an 11-0 loss in our only matchup in Quebec last year.

The SweatSox struck first in the top of the first, when Eric White scored on a wild pitch, and Kent Johnston scored on a Marc Lett RBI groundout.  Marc Sports tied it up in the bottom, pulled away in the 3rd scoring 4 runs on 4 hits, and then for good measure added one more in the 6th.

In the 7th, Cory Bond recorded the always rare really-opposite field RBI single, that brought the tying run on deck, but it just wasn’t a big enough moment for the SweatSox to pull through.

The winner of the 2004 A&W Kamloops International Baseball Game MVP Award is: Mark Bond.  The Bus Cop had two hits including a double, and made his season debut on the mound, throwing a near scoreless 6th inning while recording 2 strikeouts.

Honourable mentions go out to Eric White (1B, 2B, 2IP, 2K), Cory Bond (H, RBI), Marc Lett (RBI), and I, Shaun Keay, for my 7th inning hit right after my request to exit the game for a pinch hitter was denied.

Our first Après Baseball Hyjinx of the season in Gatineau featured the first appearance from the Gatineau bylaw enforcement agency.  Fortunately, no fines were handed out because of 1) SweatSox immunity, and 2) nobody on Marc Sports is old enough to buy beer.

Final SweatSox vs Marc Sports Notes/Thoughts:

  • The SweatSox are 0-3 in games Kent Johnston has played
  • The SweatSox are 0-3 since batting practice
  • A 4-20 season is still in play
  • The SweatSox finish May with a 4-3 record, and tied for 2nd place
  • Eric White isn’t allowed to bike in the dark
  • Kent Johnston is the proud new owner of a gently used tennis ball
  • Mrs. Eric and Mrs. Cop watched the game together, but didn’t know each other’s name. For the record, Eric’s girl is named Mrs. Eric, and Cop’s girl is named Mrs. Cop. You’re welcome.
  • Cory Bond drank nearly 20% of the total amount of beer consumed last night
  • Mark Stinson’s wedding vows will include: “for drunkerer or soberer”

Next up for the SweatSox is our first 2015 matchup against the Braves, tonight at the Sportsplex.  This is a big game for the 4-3 SweatSox, whose preseason goal was to be exactly .500 through 8 games…
