The Stittsville SweatSox

Who Are You?

Posted on June 23, 2015June 23, 2015

For the 27th time in NCBL regular season history, the SweatSox and Mudd faced off in Tier 2 action this past Sunday at Kinsmen.  But before we talk baseball, lets talk footwear!

When we were clearing out our dugout after the Mavericks tourney last weekend, we noticed a pair of cleats were left behind.  We soon realized that they belonged to Mark Bond, who had rushed off to watch the season finale of Game of Thrones at a hardcore (like volleyball hardcore) cosplay party.  It was suggested we post a picture of it on our IM thread so he’d know, but we only use our Whatsapp for non-baseball related conversations (like advertising our own personal businesses), so we decided to just stash the spikes in a trunk and let him sweat for a few days.

Fast-forward to Sunday when Bus Cop went to change shoes and couldn’t find his cleats.  Assuming he left them at home so not bothering to ask us if we knew where they were, he successfully scrambled to borrow a pair from somebody else.  Here are the clues, can you figure out who he borrowed from?

  1. He told Cory Bond he borrowed a pair from Chris
  2. He told I, Shaun Keay, that he borrowed a pair from Army
  3. He told Craig Cornell he borrowed a pair from someone who once played in Tier 3
  4. He told Chris Lidstone he borrowed a pair from someone who played Fall Ball
  5. He told John Groves he borrowed a pair from someone who won an official NCBL award
  6. He told Mark Stinson he borrowed a pair from someone who played in the Brewer tournament last year

Correct Answer: Chris Armstrong, Capital City Cubs

SweatSox vs Mudd featured a pitching matchup between the Tier 2 Most Valuable Players from 2007 & 2008: Mark Dorrington v Greg Elliott.  The over/under for total runs was set at 3.5, so hopefully you were smart and bet the under.

The SweatSox opened the scoring in the 3rd inning when Eric White scored Craig Cornell (sans helmet) from second base.  The Mudd tied it in the 4th when Josh Ramage couldn’t scoop a would-be inning ending double play at 1B.  The SweatSox took the lead in the 7th when Josh redeemed himself and knocked in Armando Navarro, who was a little slow seeing the stop sign, stopping 10 feet before the plate instead of 90, but still somehow scored.  The SweatSox held serve in the bottom of the 7th to secure the win.

Our Battalion-Style Baseball Only Recap: SweatSox scored 1 in the 3rd.  Mudd scored 1 in the 4th.  SweatSox scored 1 in the 7th.  SweatSox win 2-1.

Broment of the Day: The SweatSox infield gathers at the mound (Tribu-style) in the bottom of the 7th for an unprecedented strategy session.  Runners at 2nd (winning) and 3rd (tying), nobody out, 9-1-2 coming up, what do we do.  Apparently we play strong D and win!?!

SweatSox 2. Mudd 1. Final.

Since Eric White chose not to cash in his free 2004 A&W Kamloops International Baseball Game MVP Award, I guess there was no winner of the 2004 A&W Kamloops International Baseball Game MVP Award.

The Après Baseball Hyjinx featured the first ever Ross Hughes shotgun, sandwiched between the 14th Lidstone vs I, Shaun Keay shotgun-off.

It looks like I finished first after a late start, threw down 2nd, but had a little more spillage.  I look forward to our 1st post-14th matchup.

The Chris Lidstone Instagram of the Week: Chris Lidstone, the “hero” Mindy both wants and deserves, has an Instagram account.  He doesn’t know how he got it, he doesn’t know how he uploaded a picture on it, but he knows it’s there now.

Final SweatSox vs Mudd Notes/Thoughts:

  • Cory Bond is now tied with Doug Dorion and Craig Cornell for the team lead in managerial wins (73)
  • The SweatSox are 1 win a way from tying our 2014 total
  • The Mudd lead the lifetime series vs the SweatSox 14-13
  • Both Josh Ramage and Armando Navarro thought the games was an hour earlier
  • Eric White likes to steal bases, but now he’s stealing cars
  • By-Law 2.3 be damned: The PMA Panthers vs Capital City Cubs appetizer ended 6 minutes early so the Sox-Mudd entrée wouldn’t be delayed
  • Mark Bond’s strike percentage from: Mound (40%), RF (100%)
  • Kent Johnston’s legs and Cory Bond’s arm would make the ideal SweatSox CF
  • Ice makes things cold fast
  • When the Authority pulls GLE from the mound, it means Cory Bond is a quitter
  • Josh Ramage would rather be unnecessarily left on the mound in a meaningless tournament game than watch a single second of rec league 30+ women’s soccer
  • Chris Lidstone really wanted to watch his girl play soccer, but was peer pressured into staying in the circle
  • Mindy’s privacy settings on Facebook seem to be working perfectly
  • Do John Groves and Keith Bray still have beef?
  • Phil Johnson has intestinal fortitude
  • Ross Hughes ordered delivery
  • Chris Lidstone’s favourite comic book character is: The Penguin
  • Despite getting us temp-banned from Twitter last year, Craig Cornell has been deemed too noble to play for the Panthers

Finally, our deepest thoughts go out to Alliance member Timothy Louis Gautam, who has fallen on hard times and had to move back into his mother’s basement.  Hey, at least he didn’t have to become her butler!

Speaking of the Panthers, shoutout to the most tenured player in Tier 1, and the glue that holds the Panthers together day after day, game after game, betrayal after betrayal: Steve Smith!

Next up for the SweatSox is our much-anticipated return to Summerhays tonight.  We may also have a game against  the Cardinals at the Sportsplex sometime before that.
