And now, in my own words, a breakdown of last night’s SweatSox vs Crusaders match-up:
WHERE ELSE- Our playoff series against the Barons starts in 3 days, but before we can focus on that, we first need to get through 2 “meaningless” games against the Tier 4 bound Crusaders.
The goal for these two games set forth by our great Authority Cory Bond was simple: No unnecessary risks (aka don’t get hurt). So naturally, our fearless leader decided to roll the dice and start Eric White.
This move backfired almost immediately when the Crusaders jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first. White pitched the first three innings before finally getting the hook with the SweatSox up 12-2, but the damage was done, White tweaked his elbow while facing the final batter of his final inning. We don’t yet know what this means for his playoff availability, or our playoff chances.
The SweatSox offense was rolling in this one, putting up a season high 16 runs in just 4 innings of at bats. Eric the batter helped Eric the pitcher secure the win, leading the team with 3 hits, 3 runs scored, and 3 runs batted in. Mike Pignat, Larry Pawelek, Trevor Williams, and Craig Cornell each chipped in with 2 hits each. Nick Henderson got his steps in, circling the bases and scoring 3 times. Cory Bond was the lone SweatSox strikeout victim, tying Phil Leduc for the team lead at 14 apiece. And I, Shaun Keay, got hit by 2 pitches in my 2 plate appearances. They better not hit me again tonight.
Speaking of HBP’s, shout-out to Dave Rotari, who made his first plate appearance of the year last night. The bases were loaded, the pressure was on, and he got HBP, picking up an RBI in the process. Way to take one for the team!
