And now, in my own words, a breakdown of last night’s SweatSox vs Crusaders match-up:
FINALLY, NO TRILLIUM?– Last night at the Sportsplex, the SweatSox ended our regular season with a 12-6 loss to the Crusaders, finishing the season with an 11-12-1 record, and a date with the Barons in Round 1 of the playoffs starting this Friday.
In an even further egregious display of managing incompetence, SweatSox Authority Cory Bond gave #2 starter Josh Ramage the nod a day after ace Eric White got hurt starting a meaningless game himself. Fortunately, Ramage seems to have walked away unscathed, throwing 2 innings of tune-up, giving up 2 hits, 2 walk, a 1 run before exiting the game with a 5-1 lead.
Larry Pawelek pitched 4 innings of relief, giving up 12 hits and 8 runs, while picking up our final L of the 2023 regular season. He did strike out 3 Crusaders though, shame on you Wes Kelly, Ethan Fisher, and Jason McGee.
Craig Cornell closed the game for the SweatSox, making his annual pitching appearance in our final game of the regular season. Cornell gave up 3 hits and 3 runs in his 1 inning of work, and he even recorded a strikeout: shame on you Carlos Mendoza.
With Eric White finally benched for the majority of a game, it was someone else’s turn to step up and lead the offense, and that someone else was Steve Brown. Downtown led the team with 2 hits (1B, 2B), and 2 RBI. Honourable mention to Trevor Williams, who scored 2 runs from the leadoff position.
And WTF is going on with the Crusaders pitching staff: I, Shaun Keay, got HBP 2 more times last night, making that 4 HBP’s in 5 plate appearances over a 26 hour period.
I fucking hate pitchers.
We had a few standout performances on defense last night: Shoutout to starting shortstop Craig Cornell, who had 5 assists and 2 putouts in 6 innings of work at SS. Honourable mention to Mike Pignat, who had 3 catches and 0 errors in LF, and Jaspreet Sanghra, who had 2 putouts and 3 assists at 2B. Our new middle infield combo is primed for the playoffs!!!
NEXT UP for the SweatSox is our first round playoff series against the Barons, starting on Friday.

- Oppenheimer was long, but good, but long
- Nick Henderson assumed we were playing a 10th straight game at Trillium, and drove all the way there first
- Craig Cornell is on a 2-game chew streak
- I, Shaun Keay, absolutely nailed the car-to-car gum toss at the Woodroffe/Hunt Club intersection
- Legend has it Seb Morrissette is still in the Sportsplex parking lot
