Land the Plane, Phil | SweatSox vs Coyotes 1.0 RECAP

Posted on June 10, 2024November 21, 2024

UPPER KINSMEN– The SweatSox’s eight-game winning streak against the Coyotes, a record dating back to early 2004, came to a dramatic end on Sunday as they fell 10-9 in a thrilling, back-and-forth contest at Upper Kinsmen. The SweatSox, who entered the game with a 2-3 record, fought fiercely, but ultimately couldn’t hold off a Coyotes team bolstered by a key last-minute addition.

In a game that saw six lead changes, the Coyotes secured victory with a go-ahead run in the top of the 7th inning. The SweatSox had a chance to respond in the bottom half, but newly-signed Coyotes pitcher Jeremie Goyer was electric in his NCBL debut. Just hours after signing, Goyer not only went 1-for-3 with a double and a run scored, but he also struck out three SweatSox in the 7th to clinch the save. If only someone would have Kikuchi’d him at some point during the game.

Kevin Seguin took the win on the mound for the Coyotes, while Eric White, who surrendered the go-ahead run in the final inning, was tagged with the loss. White, however, shone on offense, going 2-for-3 with a sacrifice fly, a run scored, and five RBIs, including a crucial bases-loaded triple that pulled the SweatSox back into contention.

Defensively, Kent Johnston delivered a standout performance in center field, making a season-high three catches, while Josh Ramage was named the “Sweatiest Player of the Game” after pitching six innings of 12-hit ball and collecting his 69th career no-decision. Ramage also contributed at the plate with two hits and a team-leading two runs scored.

Mark Bond kept the SweatSox’s hopes alive with a timely two-run single in the 6th inning to tie the game, but in the end, it was the Coyotes who prevailed, putting a dramatic stop to the SweatSox’s dominance in the rivalry.

The memorable game included an instant classic quote from SweatSox player Trevor Williams: “Here’s the deal, I’m the best there is. Plain and simple. I wake up in the morning and I piss excellence.”

The SweatSox will look to bounce back Tuesday as they take on the Barons at Brewer Park.

NOTE: Our keen-eyed Twitter followers probably noticed that this is the 2nd straight game where I, Shaun Keay, haven’t posted a game recap tweet.  This was not by accident (or laziness), this is a direct challenge to Josh Ramage.  Lately, Ramage seems to be caring more about our socials than producing on the baseball field, so until he brings his batting average back up to .400, picks up a W on the bump, and gets Tier 3 Player of the Week honours, there will be no post-game tweets.  I may still do the pregame ones to appease our sponsors.

Final SweatSox vs Coyotes Notes/Thoughts:

  • If you want to 69 some 65’s, Saturday night at the Mow is where to go.
  • Robbie Mow is a jerk for not putting the sound on the TV’s
  • Cory is not our coach, he’s basically just Accounts Receivable
  • Putting me into the game to try and hit a walk-off jack was a no-brainer, but did I even know? Yes.
  • Cory injuring his leg on a foul ball never would’ve happened if he played on the Red Sox, where all players get complimentary shin and elbow guards
  • What’s the story with how Phil broke his leg?  Well, the sea was angry that day my friends.
  • Consecutive games not hitting into a triple play: 2
  • Through 6 SweatSox games, the Arsonist has thrown 27 innings, putting him on pace for an impressive 107 IP this year.  Who’s managing this team, Johnnie B. Baker Jr?
  • Talks did occur during the game between Coyotes and SweatSox management re: a CK-Larry trade.  Terms could not be reached.
  • Over the last year, we’ve now struck out 16 times in 6 innings against pitchers signed by our opponent the same day as our game.
  • Cory will not try new foods within or adjacent to the 613 area code.
  • If Prime is 100% coconut water, Cory is 100% out
  • There appears to be a Kanata-Costco pickle shortage ever since the SweatSox got back from Missouri
  • Nobody beats the Coyotes 9 straight times!
  • Kinsmen holds up better under rain than the likes of Trillium or Southgate, especially when the tarp is placed correctly on the field.  Obviously, it’s no match for the Morgan though.
  • I, Shaun Keay, didn’t stay long enough to kick ass or chew bubblegum. So double the pleasure, double the fun, on Tuesday.
  • If only we still had a lab guy on our team. Jas has some runoff that needs testing
  • If anyone has a roofing nailer Andrew can borrow for a couple of weeks, let him know
  • The first rule of the Osgoode homicide is you don’t talk about the Osgoode homicide
  • Ross may have found a reason, or two, to come back
