Trillium, July 3 — On a warm Wednesday evening, the SweatSox dropped a tightly contested game to the Lumberjacks, falling 6–3 at Trillium. The loss brought the SweatSox record to 6–5, as the team struggled to overcome a pivotal four-run third inning by their opponents.
The Lumberjacks, now surging in their division, used a masterful performance from Alex Poulin both on the mound and at the plate to secure the victory. Poulin’s dominance began from the first pitch, setting the tone with a dazzling first inning, striking out the SweatSox’s top of the order—Eric White, Kent Johnston, and Mattingly Romanin—on just 14 pitches. Pou-Pou would go on to pitch seven strong innings, allowing eight hits, two walks, and two earned runs while racking up an impressive 10 strikeouts.
It was Poulin’s bat, however, that delivered the night’s turning point. With two runners in scoring position during the third inning, Poulin laced a two-run double to right-center, capping a four-run rally that put the Lumberjacks ahead for good.
Despite the loss, the SweatSox showed flashes of brilliance. Starter Josh Ramage battled through six innings, allowing 11 hits but managing to minimize the damage outside of that fateful third inning. His effort kept the game within reach, but the offense couldn’t capitalize in key moments.
Steve Brown stood out for the SweatSox, going 2-for-4 at the plate and showcasing the results of some midseason adjustments after tips from Louis Gadbois of the Black Sox last game. Mike Pignat also chipped in with a 2-for-3 performance, including a ringing double, while Jaspreet Sanghra put on a clinic in left field, making four highlight-reel catches that earned him “Sweatiest Player of the Game” honors.
In injury news, the SweatSox received word that I, Shaun Keay will be out indefinitely after suffering a ruptured bicep at the elbow. The prognosis, though discouraging, confirmed no additional damage to the shoulder, offering a sliver of optimism for his recovery timeline.
The SweatSox will aim to rebound this Friday at Trillium when they take on the Coyotes, weather permitting.
